Yes, we also bought the painting of the store in the West End at the corner of Barclay and Nicola and the painting of the Vernon Drive Grocery. I would have also liked to have bought the painting of the store at the corner of Knight street and 49th (I think it was 49th or possibly 41st) which had a lot of flowers for sale outside. Sadly that painting had already been sold and sadly the store isn’t there anymore. We are from Vancouver but most of the family moved to Australia over the past few decades, except for our son who lives in Amsterdam. My partner and I gave the Vernon Drive painting to our daughter who lives nearby in Sydney, but our son really loves it. He has a miniature version that our daughter painted for him.

One thing that you might be interested in is that Australians have a strong culture of buying paintings and sculptures, which makes for a very active art scene. I have no idea where this culture comes from, but it has been present since probably the 1880s. We have also been buying Australian paintings while living here.

My plan is to move for half of the year back to Vancouver, starting in 2026, as we still have a house near the Drive. Your paintings are likely to stay here in Sydney for a few years longer, since I don’t expect my partner to leave her work here for at least another six or seven years.

      Best,

You have bought some of my favourite paintings – it’s too bad that Dr. Vigari Gallery had to close. That was such a good venue for me to show my paintings and before that, my pottery. I haven’t painted for a bit but I am getting ready to begin something new, I’m just not sure what! Time to start exploring the city again with my camera. I think I know which painting you are referring to with the store front with all the flowers in the front – Larch Grocery which was at Larch and Broadway.

I didn’t know that about Australia having such a good art scene. It makes life interesting, for sure.

It sounds like a great plan – to live in Sydney for the 1/2 the year and Vancouver for 1/2 the year.

It’s great to know the history of where some of my paintings have ended up. Thanks for telling me.

Good luck with your move back here, I hope it goes well.
        Sylvia
